The American drama series Queen Sugar was created by director Ava Duvernay and Oprah Winfrey. The show is based on Natalie Baszile's 2014 novel of the same name and follows three siblings living in rural Louisiana who are dealing with the aftermath of their father's sudden death.
The siblings, Nova, Charley, and Ralph, must decide the fate of the family's 800-acre sugarcane farm while dealing with other issues such as racial profiling and inequities in the criminal justice system. Queen Sugar won the NAACP award of Outstanding Writing in a Dramatic Series in 2017.
